This is one of the original tubular bells used by mike oldfield, possibly for the 1999 tour. Note: this bell is only a dummy bell. It was stuffed with foam and fitted with a transducer to trigger a sample. I took the foam out and gave it a thwack! great fun but it sounds absolutely terrible in my opinion.

The chimes of big ben first appeared on bbc radio at the very end of 1923 to announce the new year. In december 1948 this recording (catalogue number 825677) marked the 25th anniversary of big ben’s broadcasting career. Because the recording was made inside the tower there’s plenty of intriguing mechanical detail in addition to the tolling of the quarter bells and the 13-ton great bell. Big ben is the unofficial name for the great bell. This is a recording that was carried out in longone sabino, a small town located in italy in the province of rieti, where the bells are heard ringing during the feast of saints cosma and damiano which takes place on september 26th. Bell ringers practising in marsden, west yorkshire. Untreated audio. A long silence has been recorded after the bells stop to enable noise removal. There is a some barely audible, infrequent, traffic noise and there are a few barely audible footsteps. Recorded on a roland r05 with wolf windshield.
